Ordering Limit Removed for 2011 Proof Silver Eagles

Effective Friday, July 15, 2011, the United States Mint removed the ordering limits for the 2011 Proof American Silver Eagle.

When the product first went on sale June 30, 2011, an ordering limit of 100 coins per household was in place. The Mint indicated that after the first week of sales, the limit would be re-evaluated and either extended, adjusted, or removed. The removal of the limit comes after the second week.

Through July 3, the US Mint had reported sales of 367,623 of the 2011 Proof Silver Eagles. In the next full week of availability, the pace of sales had declined. Another 40,368 coins were sold to bring total sales to 407,991. The next report of sales should be available tomorrow.

Last year, the ordering limit for the 2010 Proof Silver Eagle had also been removed after two weeks. Initial sales figures came in at a suspiciously low 273,212. No sales report was issued the following week. For the third week, total sales of 707,704 were reported.

Barring any unforeseen developments, the 2011 Proof Silver Eagles should remain available until very late in the current year, if not into the following year. The coins are priced at $59.95 based on a market silver price of $37.50 per ounce.

The mintage on the 2011 1 oz silver Chinese Pandas has been increased from 3,000,000 to 6,000.000. No word yet on how many of the additional ones will make their way to the USA and EU market. What will now happen with premiums in the after market? Is demand still there to treat them as more then a bullion coin?

Let us know your thoughts. The Chinese market is as strong right now.

Proof Silver Eagle Preliminary Details

The United States Mint recently published pricing for the 2011 Proof Silver Eagle and provided some other preliminary details to customers who have subscriptions placed for the offering.

Based on information published in the Federal Register, the cost of the 2011 Proof Silver Eagle will be $59.95. According to information provided to subscription customers, there will be an ordering limit of 100 coins per household in place at the start of the offering. Based on the Mint’s online product schedule, the coins will be released on June 30, 2011.

The pricing reflects an increase of $14 from the 2010-dated proof coin, which was $45.95. This increase was to be expected, since the market price of silver has risen.

Pricing for the 2010 Proof Eagle was provided on October 4, 2010, when silver was $22.03 per ounce. At the time the coins went on sale November 19, silver had risen to $27.07 per ounce. The premium above metal value at these two respective points in time was $23.92 (108.6%) and $18.88 (69.7%).

The premium for the 2011 Proof Silver Eagle based on today’s London Fix silver price of $37.38 is $22.57 (60.4%).

The household ordering limit for this year’s offering is the same that was initially in place for last year’s offering. The limit for the 2010 proof Silver Eagle was eventually removed after two weeks of sales.

The initial start of sales for the 2011 Proof Silver Eagle is significantly ahead of last year’s offering, which was released on November 19 and sold out by December 28 at 860,000 units.

There is no “S” mintmark on them. In fact, there is no mintmark on any bullion silver American Eagle coins.

But since buyers can pick up their coins in San Francisco, how long will it be before some enterprising marketer puts them in a slab with a label proclaiming them San Francisco American Eagles?

It shouldn’t be long.

It will be rarer, too, as many of this generation of collectors have come to expect of any coin from San Francisco.

The Mint says it can strike up to several hundred thousand coins a week.

But S-mint silver Eagle output will end when the 2012 collector coin sets manufacturing schedule kicks in at the end of the summer.

How many silver American Eagles will be produced in the meantime?

Three million? Four million?

It’s anybody’s guess, but the mystery will augment the sales pitch. After all, if demand for Eagles should happen to fall during the summer, San Francisco output could be even less.

So what will a San Francisco bullion American Eagle slabbed as MS-69 or MS-70 be worth?

Right now the figure is just a glimmer in the minds of clever marketers

2011 Proof American Gold Buffalo Coins

The 2011 Proof Gold Buffalo Coins will go on sale at the US Mint today, May 19, 2011 at 12:00 Noon ET. This release comes less than two weeks after the sell out of the 2010-dated version, making for only a small gap in availability for the popular 24 karat gold proof coins.

After a few years or cancellations, delays, and general uncertainty, the US Mint has managed to catch up with their numismatic gold offerings and get things on a normalized schedule. By contrast, the 2009 Proof Gold Buffalo had not been released until October 29. The 2010 coin showed improvement with a release date of June 3.
The American Gold Buffalo features James Earle Fraser’s design for the 1913 Type I Buffalo Nickel. The profile of a Native American believed to be based on three real life chiefs appears on the obverse. The reverse features an American Bison or Buffalo on a raised mound. This is believed to have been modeled after Black Diamond of the New York Zoological Gardens.

The classic design was resurrected for use on the 24 karat gold bullion program introduced in 2006. For each year, the US Mint has also made available collectible proof version of the coin. For 2008, the offerings were expanded to include uncirculated coins and fractional coins, but the extra versions were ultimately discontinued.

It’s interesting to note that Public Law 109-145, which authorized the American Gold Buffalo specifies that Fraser’s obverse and reverse designs for the Buffalo Nickel must be used only for the initial year of release. After the initial one year period, the Secretary of the Treasury has the option of changing the obverse or reverse design. So far this option has not been utilized.

The 2011 Proof Gold Buffalo Coins each contain one troy ounce of .9999 fine (24 karat) gold. The coins are presented in a hardwood box with matte finish and faux leather insert. There has been no maximum mintage level established and there are no household ordering limits in effect.

Each coin is priced at $1,760.00 for the start of sales. These coins are covered under the US Mint’s flexible pricing policy for certain gold and platinum numismatic coins. As such, the price may be adjusted as frequently as weekly in response to changes in precious metals prices.

2010 Proof Gold Buffalo Sold Out

The 2010 Proof Gold Buffalo coins have now sold out at the US Mint. The sell out comes just a few days before the 2011-dated version is scheduled to go on sale.

Sales of the one ounce proof coin began on June 3, 2010. At the time, the coins were priced at $1,510 each, based on an average gold price in the $1,200 to $1,249.99 range. There were no ordering limits or stated maximum mintage for the coins.

After opening with sales of 12,778, the 2010 Proof Gold Buffalo remained a relatively steady seller during the ensuing months. The last reported sales through May 1, 2011 were 49,236. When last available, the coins were priced at $1,810 each, reflecting an average gold price in the $1,500 to $1,549.99 range.

It seems that the final mintage will land not too far from the level for the 2009 Proof Gold Buffalo. The US Mint has now released the final audited mintage for this issue as 49,306. The final mintages for all Proof Gold Buffalo coins are shown below.

General Coin Information

Mexican Libertad Silver Bullion Coins are struck annually for investors and collectors and were first minted in 1982. A beautiful winged angel design has been portrayed on the coin since its inception, but a re-design occurred in 1996 to “make it more attractive,” the Mexican Mint said. That design, which is still used today, depicts the spectacular Angel of Independence — an eight ton golden statue on top of a tall slender column in Mexico City.

Mexico is known for producing some of the largest silver coins in the world, which is highlighted by the Libertad. The coins are struck in pure 99.9% fine silver and are available in a variety of sizes, although they were initially launched in just 1 oz. That changed in 1991 when coins of 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/10 oz, and 1/20 oz sizes were added. 2 oz and 5 oz size was added in 1996. The latest addition was 1 kilogram size in 2002.

Obverse Design

The obverse or heads side of the coin features an eagle battling a snake (Mexico’s national coat of arms), which is surrounded by a wreath and the words “ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS”. Encircling the center are ten eagle designs that have been used as National Emblems through the centuries, including one depicted in the 16th century Mendocino Codex.

Reverse Design

Since 1996, the reverse or tails side of the coin features the famed winged angel design. The angel towers above a background of the volcanoes Popocatépetl and Iztaccihuatl.
Inscription surrounding the top include the numerical size following by “ONZA” for “ounce”, then “PLATA PURA” for “pure silver”, the year of issue, “LEY” and “.999″.

The Royal Canadian Mint has released the 2011 Grizzly silver bullion coin, its latest issue within the Canadian Wildlife coin series.

The one-ounce .9999 fine silver bullion coin features a one-time use design with a maximum mintage of only 1,000,000. It is the second of six silver coins planned in the Wildlife program and the final 2011-dated issue.

The obverse side features an effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, created in 2003 by Canadian portrait artist Susanna Blunt. Inscriptions include ELIZABETH II, 5 DOLLARS and 2011.
