I recently discovered that one of my 2006 Buffalo Proof coins has 4 dark red spots on it. The coin was never opened, and it is still in it's original US Mint packaging. Since the coin is .9999 pure gold, it is highly unlikely that these are copper or alloy spots. There must have been something that happened at the mint during the manufacturing of the coins. I have no idea what might be the composition of these dark red spots. I do know that the typical coin cleaning solvents (MS70 and E-Z-est) had no effect on the spots. Whatever they are, they are strongly bonded to the surface of the coin. I have not seen this on any other .9999 gold coins except for one 1989 $50 gold Maple Leaf. It had similar red spots that were impossible to remove. So what are these red spots on .9999 pure gold coins that have been sealed and carefully stored. And no, they are definitely not counterfeits. The Buffalo came directly from the US Mint. I also used a digital scale and micrometer to check them.

I'm guessing they are PCGS. They started spraying them before they were incapsulated. The spray caused them to turn red. Same thing happened with 2008 Chinese Pandas the slabbed. I don't know if they changed this or not.
